Tips to maintain your skin elasticity while your hormones change
Aesthetician Roxanne Lanthier shares her advice for maintaining your skin's elasticity through daily skincare and healthy lifestyle habits as your hormones change
As we age, our bodies go through numerous changes, including fluctuations in hormonal levels. These hormonal changes can have a significant impact on our skin, as reduced hormone production leads to decreased collagen and elastin production, resulting in loss of skin elasticity. However, there are steps you can take to support and maintain healthy skin elasticity during this transitional phase.

Establish a skincare routine

Skin care
Adopting a consistent skincare routine can significantly benefit your skin's elasticity. Start by cleansing your face with a hydrating cleanser twice a day to remove impurities. Follow up with a treatment serum and then apply a moisturizer with anti-aging ingredients like retinol or hyaluronic acid to promote collagen production and retain moisture.
Prolonged exposure to the sun's harmful UV rays can accelerate skin aging and reduce elasticity. Make it a habit to apply broad-spectrum sunscreen with a minimum SPF of 30 every day, even during cloudy weather. Additionally, protect your skin by wearing wide-brimmed hats, sunglasses, and seeking shade particularly during peak sun hours.

Consider professional treatments

In some cases, professional treatments may be beneficial in maintaining skin elasticity. At Young LDN we offer a few different treatments to help stimulate collagen production and improve skin texture and elasticity.
Microneedling is a popular treatment to stimulate, tighten and plump the skin and helps to reduce fine lines. We use a Growth Factor solution from AnteAGE which contains synthesized human Growth Factor and cytosignals that mimic our body's natural biosignals and a high-grade hyaluronic acid which is a powerful humectant that promotes rapid re-hydration and volume enhancement within the upper layers of the skin.

Emface, which is the newest cutting-edge procedure from BTL lifts and tightens the elevator muscles in the face and doubles the amount of elastin in the tissue as well as increases collagen. Clinical studies showed that the simultaneous emission of synchronized RF and HIFES™ energies reduces the effects of the facial aging process. Four treatments at weekly intervals are recommended for best results.
Exilis is another RF based treatment that delivers heat into the deeper layers of the skin, triggering the production of new collagen and elastin, which are the key components of tighter, younger-looking skin. The effects of these treatments continue to improve for up to 3 months after treatment and can last 12 to 18 months.

Nourish your skin from within

Healthy eating
A nutritious and balanced diet is vital for maintaining skin elasticity. Focus on consuming collagen-boosting nutrients such as vitamin C, omega-3 fatty acids, and antioxidants found in fruits, vegetables, fatty fish, nuts, and whole grains.
Proper hydration is crucial for maintaining skin elasticity. Drink an adequate amount of water throughout the day to keep your skin hydrated and plump. It is also beneficial to use a humidifier in dry environments, as this can help prevent dehydration of the skin.

Exercise regularly

Regular exercise has a positive impact on overall health, and it can also benefit your skin. Engaging in physical activity promotes blood circulation, which delivers essential nutrients and oxygen to the skin cells, promoting elasticity. Aim for at least 30 to 45 minutes of moderate exercise most days of the week, such as brisk walking, cycling, or yoga.

I would recommend fitness concept F45 for this, not only is it a great way to strengthen your body for real-life activities but the F45 workout focus on whole-body movements. You'll get a healthy mix of high-intensity interval training, and functional training every week.

Manage stress levels

Heightened stress levels can wreak havoc on our hormonal balance, thereby affecting our skin elasticity. Take time to engage in stress-relieving activities such as meditation, deep breathing exercises, yoga, or pursuing hobbies that help you relax. Prioritizing self-care and engaging in activities you enjoy can significantly reduce stress and help maintain hormonal balance.

Get quality sleep

Adequate sleep is essential for overall skin health and maintaining elasticity. During sleep, our body repairs and regenerates cells, including those in the skin. Aim for seven to nine hours of quality sleep each night and establish a consistent sleep routine.

Additionally, consider sleeping on your back to avoid sleep lines and creases that can contribute to the loss of skin elasticity. Investing in a silk or satin pillowcase can also help reduce friction and potential damage to the skin.

Keeping your skin radiant

Although hormonal changes can affect skin elasticity, following these tips can help you maintain a supple and youthful complexion throughout this transition. Nourish your skin from within, establish a consistent skincare routine, protect your skin from the sun, exercise regularly, manage stress levels, get quality sleep, and consider professional treatments when necessary.
Combined with a healthy lifestyle, these steps will support a radiant and elastic skin appearance as your hormones change.
