Would you date a rival football team supporter?
Which football team you support has huge consequences for who you date, says research by SeatPick. Here's how far footie fans will go to show their loyalty
With the Premier League season underway, and exciting matches scheduled in the upcoming weeks, SeatPick were keen to uncover what football fans would really sacrifice to see their team winning certain events this year.
SeatPick’s survey of 3,500 football fans revealed how loyal football fans truly are, as well as what they would give up for their team—including missing a partner’s birthday party to attend a live football match, and even refusing to date a rival team supporter.

Would football fans choose the beautiful game over love?

Football-on-date

Football fans and love

SeatPick's study exposed that a shocking number of fans would refuse to date a rival team supporter—over half of respondents, in fact, consider loyalty to their team more important.
Similarly, nearly half of football fans admitted to finding other football fans attractive, reportedly considering being a football fan a turn-on. Whether you're in a lively bar conversation or crafting your Tinder profile, it's worth keeping in mind that a shared love for the beautiful game can spark a connection and elevate your dating game.

The results also revealed that a staggering one in three fans have ghosted a date for not liking football, and one in five have cancelled a date to attend a match—suggesting that many football fans will choose the beautiful game over dating.

Football fans on a first date

Dating a loyal football fan can be an exhilarating adventure, filled with passionate matchday rituals, heated discussions about tactics, and the electric atmosphere of stadiums. However, when will their devotion come in the way of your relationship?
Your choice of attire on a first date not only reflects your personal style but also communicates a lot about your personality and level of effort. Shockingly, SeatPick's survey found that as many as 45 per cent of football fans confessed to having worn a football shirt on a first date.

Showcasing their love for their team might earn some points with other football fans, however, it is probably better to bear in mind that many people might not love this outfit choice and leave the restaurant looking for a less enthusiastic football fan to date.
Last but not least, more than a quarter of respondents admitted that they couldn’t resist a glimpse at the game’s score during a romantic first date.

Me or the match?

SeatPick’s jaw-dropping statistics also reveal that the beautiful game can even interfere with wedding ceremonies, as almost one in six have streamed a game during a wedding, and almost seven per cent have done so at their own wedding.
Not only this, nearly 15 per cent of respondents have admitted to streaming a match during a first date—raising the question, is it love at first sight, or love for the game?
In the modern age, football appears to take precedence over some relationships, as more than one in five have streamed a game during an anniversary celebration.

Mourning or match-watching, can footie fans do both?

SeatPick's study exposed that a shocking number of fans couldn't resist a secret glimpse at the match whilst paying their final respects to loved ones, as almost one in 12 respondents admitted that they have streamed a match during a funeral.
More than one in four confessed to being more discrete and limiting themselves to checking the score during a funeral, rather than streaming the entire game.

Labour and live matches

Shockingly, as many as seven per cent of Brits have gone as far as streaming a match during the birth of their own child—highlighting that some fans just can’t resist the beautiful game, even during life’s biggest moments.

This astonishing statistic proves the unwavering passion some fans hold for the beautiful game, demonstrating that, for them, the allure of football knows no bounds, even during life's most profound moments.
It's a testament to the remarkable and, at times, unexplainable connection that individuals can have with their favourite sport.

Football fans in the workplace

Remarkably, more than one in four avid football fans have openly confessed to streaming a game while at work.
This proved the undeniable magnetism of the sport, with fans often finding ingenious ways to keep up with the action, even when they're supposed to be on the clock.
