Tailoring your dating profile description for success

Tailoring your dating profile description for success
Tired of your dating app profile getting you no matches?
Writing a great dating profile description is an art, and a little like putting together a great CV: it takes a lot of trial and error to get it right and ensure you are making a good first impression.
To help you start boosting your matches and get back into dating in a big way, we've come up with a list of tips for how to tailor your dating profile description for success.

Pick the right dating app for you

The best piece of dating app advice for novices is to find an app that works for you. There are hundreds of online dating sites and apps, so it can be hard to know which ones will get you some results.
Here are some things to consider when selecting a dating app:
  • The size of the user base. If there aren't enough users on the site or app that you're interested in, your chances of finding someone compatible with your preferences will be lower.
  • User-friendliness. Is the interface easy to navigate? Are there features available that make using this particular service worth your time? Is there anything about this service that would make it hard for others who aren't tech-savvy?
You should also think about whether you want to use a free or paid matchmaking service. While it’s always nice when things are free in life, paying a subscription for a high-quality dating app may be worth it. Other users are more likely to be more invested in their search for love, and, ultimately, more respectful towards others.

Know yourself

“Know thyself above all else '' is perhaps the greatest piece of advice you’ll ever receive in life, and something you should keep in mind when creating your dating app profile.
What do you want? What do you not want? This can be a difficult question to answer, but it's important to think about it before starting your profile. Your answer will help inform the tone and content—and how much time and energy you're willing to put into it.
Spend some time thinking about yourself and what matters most to you in relationships—what kind of person would make for a good partner, and what qualities are essential for success in your relationships.

Get to the point but include what makes you interesting

Although some dating apps like Tinder are more photo-focused, it’s important to write a catchy blurb no matter which service you use. Keep your personal description as short and sweet as possible, but take the time to include anything you feel is essential and helps you stand out.
If there's something special about your life experience (like traveling or working abroad), then say so. If there's an interesting story behind how you grew up (like being raised on a hippie commune), then share it. Don't forget that this is also the place where people can learn more about your personality and interests; if there are certain things that make up who you are (like a love of reading), then include them here as well!

Stay positive

Although It's tempting to list all the things you don't want in a partner in your dating profile, consider your audience. Chances are they aren't looking for someone who's too critical or  pessimistic.
Don't be too positive either. While it's fine to express confidence in yourself and your abilities, don't come off as an egomaniac by bragging about how great of a catch you are—other people will get bored and move on quickly.

Keep the focus on you

It's natural to want to know what the other person wants from you. However, remember that this is a profile about you and your interests, not how good you are at guessing how other people feel.
The profile is an opportunity to let others get to know who you are while also letting them see if they're interested in dating someone like that—which means focusing on what makes up your personality and values, your passions and goals, dreams and life story.

Be honest

Whether you're looking for a hookup or something more serious, honesty is the best policy when it comes to crafting your profile description.  An honest approach makes sure you aren’t wasting the time of anyone who isn’t compatible with you or your lifestyle choices.
Although including your age, height, and weight can be anxiety-inducing, it’s best to be honest about these qualities too to avoid disappointment if they meet up with your match. Besides, if they are a decent catch, they will love you for the way you are!

Be open minded

When it comes to dating apps, being open minded is a must. As the saying goes, you never know what you're going to get. Be ready and willing to try new things. Don't be afraid of meeting people who are different from you—that's half the fun of dating someone new!
If you have an interest in traveling or learning about other cultures, put it out there in your profile so that others might be interested in taking those trips with you. This can be a great talking point when sending the first message to your match.
A lot of people spend their lives looking for their soulmates without ever realizing that there are a lot of potential soulmates out there, it’s maybe just your limited perspective that’s stopping you from finding them!
As the saying goes, don’t put all your eggs in one basket (unless you're sure they won't break when dropped from several feet up onto concrete below!).
