Lockdowns, Home Security and Safety

BY READERS DIGEST

The lockdowns are symbolic of a global crisis that has already resulted in millions of lives being lost and even more livelihoods being sacrificed for the sake of sustaining others. In spite of that, there is a positive side to staying at home for long periods of time with your family.

How Can the Lockdown be Seen as a Positive Occurrence?

Lockdowns and limited social interaction have had a whole series of negative impacts for sure, but the measures were implemented to stop the epidemic from spreading beyond all control. In that respect, it isn’t representative of Covid-19, but rather our fight against the disease.

How Do Lockdowns Impact Home Security?

One might believe that the crime rate would rise, on account of the ongoing unemployment problems. On the contrary, that is far from how things are in the US at least. According to a report by BBC, crime rates have plummeted ever since the pandemic broke out, and even more so after the lockdowns were imposed. While the UK continues to slowly come out of the lockdown, crime rates have not picked up by much at all.

It would be wrong to hail the novel coronavirus as a positive effect, but it is certainly the main reason behind this improvement in home and personal security all across the United States. There is no denying that more people staying at home has made homes much safer. Nevertheless, it’s best to keep your home security tighter and sharper than ever before, given that things might change, and the quiet streets may encourage some to take on criminal endeavors, especially due to the rising levels of unemployment.

What about Home Safety?

Home safety, on the other hand, is a more serious concern to deal with right now. Several aspects of domestic safety have been compromised ever since the lockdowns began, and people had to do more with less. Increased rates of domestic violence, infections, and diseases from home-borne parasites have also been reported.

Psychological issues in adults and teens due to isolation are also a serious cause for concern, as violent outbursts without an outlet can, and often do, lead to tragedies, domestic crimes, and accidents. To curb domestic abuse, report it to the police as soon as you suspect and confirm the same. Stepping in by calling the authorities is a neighborly act that can and likely will save others from a lot of harm.

Mold, on the other hand, is proving to be one of the most common health hazards in cities such as Chicago, which already had a history of extensive mold infestations due to the climatic conditions here. The good news is that being at home allows one to be more observant about indoor conditions, which makes it easier to detect a mold infestation before it can grow to unhealthy and potentially dangerous levels. Call in a Chicago mold removal service at the first sign of seeing a mold infestation.

By the time we usually notice mold, it is likely that the fungus has already spread. Therefore, a delay in action is ill-advised.

It will take a long time for things to get back to the way they were, but that does not have to be something that we cannot manage. Simply being mindful of what’s going on around us and taking timely actions in response can make all the difference that needs to be made.
