Ways to wear: Corduroy

Ways to wear: Corduroy

Stable, dependable and available in an array of colours—Corduroy should be your go-to fabric this winter. An easy way to include textures in a manner that is daytime appropriate, it adds a touch of luxury to an outfit in the way that velvet or suede might, without the same level of upkeep. Embraced by the likes of Mulberry, Nina Ricci and Prada in their AW17 collections, there are an array of gems to be found on the high street and beyond. Think jewel tones, retrofits and lots of layering—here’s how to get the look.

Blush and Tweed

A colour palette fit for a Wes Anderson movie, this dusty pink shade looks perfectly whimsical when paired with a tobacco-dusted tartan.

Our choice of candy-corduroy is a steal at just £30 from Cotton Traders, available in an abundance of sizes and lengths. The pink is carried through perfectly in a festive earring (H&M, £8.99), while the brown comes through with a J.W. Anderson clutch (£590).

The coat is all the encouragement you’ll need to think outside the women’s section—selected from Zara Men for £159, it’s a snug alternative to a thinner traditional trench. Keep things androgynous with a studded heel (ASOS, £28)—the metalware will help tone down the traditionally feminine shade of the trouser.

Soft suiting

Corduroy suits may conjur up imagery of Geography professors, but thanks to our favourite designers, they’re being revamped by a whole new generation.

Rich colours make the best impact—we love this strong khaki green from Mango, sold at £59.99 for the trousers and £89.99 for the jacket.

A white wrap blouse (£32, River Island) and belt (£270, Gucci) break up the block colour and hint at a womanly figure underneath that thick fabric.

For true Hollywood glamour, one mustn’t forget their accessories—an enigmatic pair of aviators (£12.99) and a vampy shade of red nail polish (Dior, £14.99).

Chasing rainbows

Ideal for channeling your inner child, a jumper and dungaree combination is elevated by investing in more mature fabrics. Our corduroy jumpsuit of choice is £89 from Trouva, armed with large pockets and straight, stylish legs.

A sweater from Monki (£25) adds a touch of glitter, threads of lurex woven into its stripes for a tight, retro fit.

The practical approach continues with a roomy bag and sensible shoes. ASOS have a wonderful selection of brogues at reasonable prices (our pick were just £35), as well as a handy messenger bag from Herschel (£85), the perfect size for a laptop and other important documents.

Back to basics

As we’ve learnt from earlier looks, borrowing from men's wardrobes can be highly beneficial when it comes to dressing in autumn and winter. This outfit makes use of two staples that can be easily found in any vintage shop or unisex outlet—a dress shirt and bottle green corduroy shirt.

For those who find themselves lacking, we found this white button-down from Uniqlo and a green shirt from APC for £24 and £150 respectively.

Modern accessories take this look from zero to hero. A baker boy cap is the shape of the season, and Topshop offer a perfect staple model for £15.

Add heels, cigarette trousers and a statement bag—The Gucci Soho Disco isn’t cheap at £805 but it’s a best-seller for a reason, capable of fitting all of your essentials and coordinating with almost everything.

Winter warmth

For those who feel the cold, a corduroy dress offers the perfect opportunity to feel stylish while sneaking in plenty of layers. Go up a size from normal to accommodate—New Look’s £19.99 style goes up to a size 18. Add in thick tights, thermal tops, a cosy hat (Accessorize, £14) and calf length boots. This pair from Rocket Dog (£44.99) will allow you to pop on another pair of socks underneath.

Wooden jewellery can be a lovely, earthy alternative to metal at this time of year. There’s plenty on the high street, but even more unique and ethical options flood the web.

Try etsy or visit NadiaGallini.com, which hosts a great handmade selection including this bracelet for as little as £4.
