Trend report: Ultraviolet

Chosen by Pantone as their official colour of the year, Ultraviolet is a tone you can expect to infiltrate the world of fashion, beauty and home interiors very soon.

Deeper than a pastel but richer than aubergine, the capsule colour has been interpreted far and wide by the likes of Kenzo, Le Crueset and NYX, and packs a definite punch with it’s bold, royal air.

Ultraviolet may seem intimidating to those who tend to steer clear of colour, but when treated with confidence it can be surprisingly chic.

Best of all, it’s a hue that will transition easily from winter to spring, making it the ideal investment for the British climate.

 

Block colours or high-contrast prints. This shade of purple deserves to take centre stage, so avoid ditsy or complicated prints that appear less “put together”.

True ultraviolet is particularly flattering on darker or tanned skin, but if you’re feeling a little pale this winter, softer mauves and highly-pigmented lavenders still achieve the look—play around with velvets, silks and patents for a luxury take that taps into the air of royalty that violet evokes.

Purple-hued make-up can also look smart and evening-appropriate when teamed with traditional black or grey.

Purple liners and eyeshadows do wonders to brighten tired eyes, or if you’re feeling particularly brave, a purple lipstick couldn’t be more high fashion.

 

Ultraviolet works harmoniously with greys, pinks and creams for a more romantic take on dressing, as well as deep burgundy for the office. A naturally feminine colour, toughen up your pieces with straight-cut trousers or leather jackets to keep things on trend.

As the weather warms up, we’ll be wearing our violet clashed with hot reds and pinks for true opulence. Think Frida Khalo and the colours of a Mexican summer.

More is definitely more with this look, so don’t be afraid to pile on the accessories.
