Get the look: Oprah Winfrey

Get the look: Oprah Winfrey

TV monarch, American icon and Reader’s Digest cover star, Oprah Gail Winfrey needs no introduction. With two honourary doctorate degrees and the Presidential Medal of Freedom in her jam-packed trophy cabinet, Oprah’s rise to stardom has inspired us all to be more candid and aspirational, and look great while we’re doing it…

Favouring a wardrobe that is equal parts glamour and functionality, Oprah’s sense of style has really come into it’s own in the last ten years, showing a fashion-forwardness that suits her trailblazing in other aspects of her life. Embrace the Oprah affect for yourself with our simple style guide.

Red carpet

More sophisticated than a pillar-box red, burgundy is a wonderful colour palette, ideal for formal occasions or evening wedding ceremonies. A well-cut lace dress will help streamline a silhouette and draw the eye to the details—we love this £125 cocktail frock from Next.

Maintaining the colour scheme is essential to a cohesive look, so opt for similar toned shoes (£32, Freemans), lipstick (£22, “Scarlet Express” by Nars) and a flashy cocktail ring (£629, QP Jewellers).

A big, natural hairstyle adds a little personality—Miss Jessie’s “Quick Curls” (£10) will help define the natural kinks and twists of textured hair.

Sports smart

Ever the maverick, Oprah’s high-end hoodie proved surprisingly smart for a press event.

For something similarly springlike, we champion the humble sweater vest—lightweight and cheerful, the deep V-neck of our Uniqlo choice (£9.90) layers easily over a pussybow blouse (£19.99, Bon Prix).

Office-appropriate courts (£15, Windsor Shoes) and cigarette trousers (£16, Dorothy Perkins) are a staple of most wardrobes, but it’s the extras that really bring this look up to scratch.

Oprah loves her gold jewellery, and there are plenty of options available out there to suit various price points—earrings from Angelic Diamonds (£381), ring from Mint Velvet (£22) and bangle from Kate Spade (£40).

For glasses wearers, a cat eye is essential (£89, Glasses Direct), but a glossy nude lip suits all. Nyx Butter Glow in shade “Madelaine” works wonderfully on all skin tones and is a bargain at just £5.50.

Pale and interesting

A full-length gown not for you? Get value for money by blending separates just like Oprah.

A simple cream jumper (H&M, £12.49) works beautifully with a skirt of a similar shade (Mango, £49.99), but can just as easily be dressed down with jeans at a moments notice.

Keep the palette neutral with earthy accessories—a taupe clutch bag from Swanky Swans (£17.99), gold accented belt (River Island, £12) and tortoiseshell sunglasses (£12, ASOS) all warm a skintone and match with essentially any outfit.

The final touch is an on-trend marbled ring, just £25 from Gemporia.

Black (waist) tie

The cincher of the season, corseted lace-up belts do carry something of a reputation as being a little risqué for public wear.

The key is to follow Oprah and choose simply—her classy ribboned choice is available in a very similar style on ASOS for £8.

A nipped-in waist contrasts wonderfully with Oprah’s floor-skimming skirt. The exact version can be purchased from Bruno Cucinelli for £1650. If that’s not quite in budget, it’s worth keeping an eye on the likes of Matalan or Marks and Spencer for similar shapes.

Hobbs also do a good line in classic prints, as well as a jumper very similar to Oprah’s, at a competitive price of £69. Finish off with a bold lip (£19, “Stunna” by Fenty Beauty) and an oversized ring (£25, Folli Follie) to complete the look.

Layer player

Sometimes a simple white dress just needs that something extra.

Invest in Oprah’s exact frock for £898 at The Outnet, and you’ll have a garment for life, mixed and matched each season to cater for the current trends.

As discussed above, neutrals are huge this season, and white looks great when offset with pale lilacs, greys and taupes.

The subtle shimmer of a Freemans scarf (£17.50) is a great alternative to Oprah’s glittery waistcoat and brings out the purple in her cat eye glasses (£102, Versace).

For summer, wooden bangles (£9.60, Accessorize) and open toe white shoes (£19.99, Deichmann) show off a deeper skin tone or developing tan.
