Ovarian cysts can certainly be agonising and may even indicate an underlying condition, so it's vital that you tell your doctor if you get them often.
Cysts on ovaries may often be part of ovulation, andthese are known as a “functional cyst” on the ovary. These kinds of ovarian cysts can't be prevented, but it's possible to reduce the risk of a problematic cyst, and there are healthcare options for removing and treating painful ones as well.
Reducing the Risks

Quit Smoking

Smoking can increasethe risk of developing cysts on ovaries as well as increasing the risk for various other adverse conditions such as many forms of cancer and emphysema.
If you smoke, ask the doctor for help with quitting. You can use medicines and smoking cessation plans available that will help you quit.

Consider Contraception

Oral contraceptives in many cases are recommended as a way to prevent cysts on ovaries. Oral contraceptives may also reduce the ovarian cancer risk. Talk to the doctor if you're interested in trying contraception to help control the ovarian cysts. Keep in mind that oral contraceptives have various other negative effects as well.

Treatment of The Conditions That Increase the Risk of Cysts

You're at an increased risk of acquiring cyst on ovary if you have:
  • PCOS (Polycystic ovary syndrome):This is actually a condition that will cause your sex gland to produce cyst, and you'll not ovulate if you have Polycystic ovary syndrome. It's also more prevalent to generate a higher level of male hormones while you have Polycystic ovary syndrome.
  • Endometriosis: This will cause uterine tissues to grow outside of the womb. This particular condition may cause heavy periods, pain, and inability to conceive.

Determine If Fertility Medications Should Be to Blame

Several medications that improve ovulation may also increase the risk of developing a cyston an ovary, but make sure that you talk to the doctor before stopping the medication. If you're taking clomiphene (a fertility medication), then you're at an increased risk of having ovarian cysts. Clomiphene is also known as Serophene and Clomid.
Coping with Painful Ovarian Cysts

Take A Non-Prescription or An Over-The-Counter Pain Relievers

Over-the-counter pain-killers such as ibuprofen and acetaminophen will provide alleviation for a painful cyst on an ovary. It is important to follow the manufacturer’s instructions before use. Consult with the doctor if you're not sure exactly what or how much to take.

Drink Herbal Teas

Drinking herbal teas can also help to alleviate the pain triggered by an Ovarian Cyst. The warmth of the teas will help to de-stress your muscle tissues and work as a good soothing distraction.
Good quality herbal teas to try include:
  1. Peppermint
  2. Caffeine-free green tea herb
  3. Strawberry leaf
  4. Lavender

Application of Heating Pads

A heating pad applied to the abdomen can also help to alleviate the pain induced by ovarian cysts. Use either an electric heating pad or a hot water bottle. You can place the heating pad on your lower abdomen for about 10 - 15 minutes at a time.
Ask a Gynecologist About Surgical Treatment
Surgical treatment for ovarian cysts can be performed using:
  1. Laparotomy: For larger ovarian cysts, it will be important to make a longer incision to cut out the cysts.
  2. Laparoscopy:  For smaller ovarian cysts, your doctor will make a small cut and remove the cysts by using a laparoscopic camera.
Make sure that you ask your gynaecologist about pre treatment procedures and medications to take before performing it. Pre treatment medications will help the cysts to get milder in the meantime before starting the procedure.
