6 Delicious chocolate drinks to make
Here are six deliciously tempting drinks for chocolate lovers of all ages. Whatever the season, you’ll find one to warm you up or cool you down
Aside from being one of the tastiest snacks around, chocolate is also delicious as a drink. Its versatility emphasises this further—the cocoa in a hot chocolate can keep us warm on a cold winter's day, while combining chocolate and ice cream gives a cool milkshake an indulgent twist. 
Here are six recipes that you can use to make delicious chocolate drinks, perfect for all the chocolate lovers in your life.

Chocolate milkshake

Preparation: 5 minutes
Serves: 2
Ingredients:
  • 500ml milk
  • 2 scoops vanilla ice cream
  • 2tbsp chocolate sauce/syrup
Method:
  • In a blender, combine milk, ice cream and chocolate syrup and blend until mixture is smooth and frothy
  • Pour into two tall glasses and serve

Chocolate thick shake

Ingredients:
  • 2 scoops chocolate ice cream, homemade or shop-bought
  • 100g dark chocolate, chopped
  • 125ml whipped cream
  • 1tbsp chocolate shavings, to garnish
Method:
  1. Blend the ice cream, chocolate and half the whipped cream in a blender until smooth
  2. Pour into two tall glasses, top with the remaining whipped cream and sprinkle with chocolate shavings

Hot chocolate

Ingredients:
  • 500ml milk
  • 85g dark chocolate, chopped
  • Sugar, to taste (optional)
  • White and pink marshmallows, to serve (optional; if you like, omit the marshmallows and top with a spoonful of whipped cream)
  • Grated chocolate, to serve
Method:
  1. Heat the milk in a small saucepan over low heat. Bring to a simmer; do not boil or a skin will form
  2. Add the chocolate and stir until melted and smooth. Use a whisk to make it frothy (if you like). Stir in a little sugar if desired
  3. Pour into tall, heatproof serving glasses or mugs. Top with marshmallows, if desired, and sprinkle with grated chocolate

Cinnamon cocoa

Serves: 2
Ingredients:
  • 750ml milk
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 30g unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 85g dark chocolate, chopped 
  • Ground cinnamon (optional), to serve
Method:
  1. Heat the milk and cinnamon stick in a small saucepan over low heat. Bring to a simmer; do not boil or a skin will form. Remove from heat
  2. Sift the cocoa into a small heatproof bowl or jug. Pour in the warm cinnamon milk. Remove the cinnamon stick, then add the chocolate, whisking for 3–4 minutes, or until well combined
  3. Pour into heatproof serving glasses or mugs. Sprinkle with a little ground cinnamon, if desired, and serve

Heavenly hot chocolate

Ingredients:
  • 125ml low-fat milk
  • 125ml low-fat evaporated milk
  • 1½tsp sugar
  • 3tsp unsweetened cocoa powder
  • White and pink mini marshmallows, to serve
  • Grated chocolate, to serve
Method:
  1. In a small heavy saucepan, combine the milks and sugar; heat, uncovered, over low heat for about five minutes, or until the milk bubbles gently
  2. Meanwhile, in a 250ml teacup or mug, mix the cocoa with one teaspoon water to form a thick paste
  3. When the milk is ready, slowly pour it into the cocoa paste, stirring until smooth. Top with marshmallows and sprinkle with grated chocolate. Serve immediately

Mexican-style hot chocolate

Serves: 4
Ingredients:
  • 250ml pouring cream
  • 500ml whole milk
  • 250ml low-fat milk
  • 115g firmly packed dark brown sugar
  • 30g unsweetened cocoa powder 
  • ½tsp ground ancho chilli pepper 
  • ¼tsp ground cinnamon
  • 85g dark chocolate
  • 1tsp vanilla extract 
  • 80ml thickened (heavy/double) whipping cream
  • 30g icing sugar
Method:
  1. In a saucepan over medium heat, whisk together the cream, milks, brown sugar, cocoa, chilli and cinnamon. Bring to a simmer and cook, stirring, for one minute
  2. Remove from the heat and stir in the chocolate and vanilla until the chocolate has melted. Keep warm over low heat
  3. Beat together the thickened cream and icing sugar until stiff peaks form
  4. Pour the hot chocolate into four mugs and top each with a generous dollop of whipped cream
