First look at Emily Blunt in The Girl on a Train

Thriller fans are in for a treat with the film adaptation of Paula Hawkins’ blockbuster novel, A Girl on a Train, which will be steaming into cinemas across the UK later this year. Emily Blunt leads a starry cast.

The girl on the train is rapidly going off the rails. Unable to conceive, she’s lost her husband to another woman and lost her job to binge boozing and consequent blackouts.

Yet she maintains the pretence of the daily commute, compulsively monitoring her old home from the train’s window, where her ex is now ensconced with his new partner and child. She’s also becoming increasingly obsessed with a ‘perfect’ couple who live near them.

And, as the nerve-jangling teaser trailer makes clear, there’s something dark and violent bubbling underneath. Amid all Rachel’s strobing blackouts, light and dark, truth and lies, there’s a sense that death is not far away for someone—and Rachel has no more idea than we do who’s responsible.

To say that Paula Hawkins’ bestselling novel has been a publishing phenomenon would be an understatement. Last year’s hardback was a Sunday Times number one bestseller for a record 20 consecutive weeks, and remained in the top ten for the whole of 2015, while in the US it sold over 3 million copies.

It looks like the film, directed by Tate Taylor (The Help, Get on Up), will have no trouble standing up to comparisons with that other recent nerve-shredding blockbuster Gone Girl. Emily Blunt stars as Rachel alongside Rebecca Ferguson, Haley Bennett, Justin Theroux, Luke Evans, Allison Janney and Édgar Ramírez.
