Another California-based trade for the film industry,Variety is even older than The Hollywood Reporter, with its first issue dating back to 1905 and largely covering theater and vaudeville productions in New York.

However, in 1930 a Los Angeles-based edition was launched to cover the budding motion picture industry, and the rest is history. Variety is now one of the most respected sources of film criticism in the world. It is one of only three English-language periodicals with 10,000 or more film reviews reprinted in book form.
