How to motivate staff working from home

So many businesses are now well into the swing of working from home after the Covid-19 pandemic meant that many companies were unable to use their office spaces.

One of the biggest challenges associated with working from home has been ensuring that staff remain motivated and passionate about their roles even when they are unable to physically connect with their colleagues. Here, we speak to some exciting startups who have some top tips for maintaining staff motivation levels even when working in one space is not an option.

Encourage staff to take breaks

Working from home means that there is no one there to physically remind each employee to have a drink or take their lunch break,” explains Justine Gray of startup DollarHand.com.

“So sending short emails and WhatsApp messages to remind employees that they are entitled to a rest can really help them to relax and prepare for the rest of their working day.”

“When working from home and not having to travel to a physical office space, it is important to remember that staff should still be entitled to taking short breaks throughout the day to give them time to breathe.”

Have team check-ins and calls online

“Working from home has forced so many companies to adapt to holding meetings online via Zoom, Skype and Microsoft Teams,” she continues.

“As an employer, it is important to remember to utilise these online tools to have regular check ups with each individual member of the team to ensure that they are comfortable working from home.”

“This should also allow for employees to voice any concerns they may have and make suggestions for improvement. Consequently, employers should be able to adapt and make changes to benefit their employees who cannot or are not working in a shared office space, and allow them to feel like they are being heard and understood. Ensuring that the team is happy with their working situation should help to keep them motivated within their job role.”

Offer the chance to schedule meetings

“Employees should always be aware that if they need to discuss something with another colleague, manager or employer then they should be able to schedule a meeting or time to chat in the same way that they could in an office space,” explains Richard Allan, the founder of funding platform, CapitalBean.com

“Allowing employees to check in with one another will also allow them to motivate each other and collaborate on shared tasks.”

Create shared folders

“One of the main challenges of working from home is that there may be important documents or files which cannot be accessed easily as there are only physical copies,” he says.

“Spending time to make all important documents which the team might require available online in a shared folder can save your employees time and energy when they need to access certain information quickly.”

“This can help to keep employees motivated as they won’t have to spend time searching for documents across multiple sharepoints or physical folders. Having a clear and organised system means that everyone will be able to find what they need and complete work more efficiently.”
