How to make money from your old mobile phone
What do you do with your old mobile phone when the contract ends?Be honest, you stuff it in a drawer and just let it collect dust—but you could be making money!
There are plenty of ways to sell your old mobile and fetch some cash for it. Some companies buy old phones to resell, while others buy them to recycle. Either way, your dusty old phone might be able to provide you with some extra money!

How much can you get paid?

Clearly, this is the biggest question on your mind. What’s the payout for a crusty, outdated phone?
Usually, it varies based on the following factors:
  • The age of your device
  • The brand
  • The current state—working phones will fetch more than broken ones
  • The storage capacity
  • Whether the network is unlocked or not
  • The company that buys it
You will generally get paid more for newer phones in good condition, but a completely broken phone will still get a decent bit of money. For example, you can sell a broken iPhone 6s for around £30 online. It doesn’t seem like much, but that’s pretty favourable for a phone that’s very old and doesn’t work!

How do you find the best deal?

Ah, of course, you want to get the most money possible from the sale. Thankfully, the easiest way to do this is by using a comparison website. Find somewhere that lets you compare selling prices for an iPhone or Android device.
Here, you’ll be presented with the top online deals to choose from. Spend some time looking at all the choices before selecting the one for you.
It sounds like an obvious thing to do, but it matters quite a bit! Some places might buy a phone for £5 while others are offering £75. It may be an old phone that you never use, but you don’t want to get ripped off.

How do you sell your phone?

Logistics-wise, how do you actually go about selling this old piece of junk? Ultimately, it depends on where you sell this device.
If you go down the online route, then the buyer will send you packaging material to use. They usually give you a Freepost pack and label, so posting the phone is free. All you have to do is put your device in the pack, attach the label, then post it.
Typically, the buyer will pay you via bank transfer or PayPal, and it should only take around a day upon receiving your phone.
Alternatively, you can sell it in person. Some of the online buyers have physical stores that you can go into if it’s more convenient. You may also find other offline places that don’t appear on comparison sites - though it’s rare that they offer better prices.
