Summer is now over but that doesn’t mean that your holidays have to be. We’ve created a list of the best places to visit this October. There’s close-to-home stays and others further afield, giving you the inspiration you need to get your travel fix this October.

Yorkshire Dales

This gem in the Northeast is bursting with things to do during a staycation. Packed with natural delights, why not check out one of the many waterfalls in the area, like our favourite, Aysgarth Falls. There are also historical buildings, like Pendragon Castle and Bolton Abbey, and you’ve got to check out the local cheeses in Wensleydale.

Cornwall

One of the most popular places to holiday in the UK, and for good reason. Cornwall is renowned for its beautiful beaches, picturesque harbours, and cracking food. Why not visit one of the creative hubs, like St Ives or Falmouth, check out the castles of St Michael’s Mount or the mythical Tintagel, or explore the wonders of the Eden Project. There’s something for everyone in this Southwest diamond.

London

The beating heart of England and the perfect holiday destination. Jump on a bus tour for famous sites such as Big Ben, Buckingham Palace, and the Houses of Parliament. Get a photo with one of the iconic red phone boxes, visit a world-famous museum like the V&A, or watch a show on the West End, certain to entertain. With all that exploring you’ll have worked up an appetite, so grab a bite from a fast-food favourite or at one of 66 Michelin Star restaurants.

Madeira

This Portuguese archipelago is full of activities that everyone can get involved in. Walk the streets of busting capital Funchal, go diving in the high clarity waters, and check out the farmers market for local produce. Or if you’re up for a challenge, why not take on the island’s highest peak, Pico Ruivo, with breathing taking views of the fauna and flora of this volcanic landscape. Don’t forget to buy a bottle or two of the wine named after the region.

Dubrovnik

Described as the Pearl of the Adriatic, you’ve got to check out the UNESCO World Heritage site Old Town, best seen during a walk along the walls for panoramic views. If you fancy a break from the bustling city life, take the short ferry over to Lokrum Island, to explore the gardens and cool off with a dip at one of the beaches. Dubrovnik also acts as a great base to visit other Croatian cities, like Split, Omis, and Makarska.

You won’t be disappointed if you head down to this jewel on the French Rivera. Nice is dripping in elegance and things to do for every kind of holiday maker. For art lovers, there’s the Matisse Museum, for music fans booking a show at the Opéra de Nice is a must with everything from concerts to ballets, and there’s always a stroll along the promenade with views of the coast. Check out socca, a delicious cross between a flatbread and a pancake, for a culinary treat.

Athens

Head to the capital of Greece for the birthplace of democracy. Home to historical greats like Plato, Pericles, and Socrates, Athens averages around 23° in October, perfect if you’re not ready to say goodbye to the warm weather just yet. Learn about the history of the Acropolis, do a little retail therapy in the shops, or pig out with the most authentic moussaka you’ll ever taste. 

Canary Islands

This collection of Spanish islands is a perfect October getaway destination. Hire a boat from Fuerteventura to Lobos, a largely uninhabited island surrounded by crystal clear waters. Explore the caves and parks of Tenerife, making the most of the natural wonders of the volcanic landscape. Or visit the many museums on Lanzarote, filled with the island’s culture, art, and history. Wherever you choose to go make the most of the famously clear skies with a night of stargazing.

California

Hop across the pond to America’s Golden State. Whatever kind of holiday you want, California can provide, with iconic tourist locations like Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz, and Disneyland. Road trip down the Pacific Highway in a convertible, hike through the wilds of Yosemite National Park, or take in the sights of downtown Los Angeles. It’s the destination to supersize your travels this October.

Vancouver

This western metropolis offers an amazing mix of architecture surrounded by mountains. A whale tour is an absolute must, with the opportunity to see marine life like orcas, seals, and dolphins, while also getting a unique view of the city from the water. Watch the Canucks play hockey at the Rogers Arena. Or check out Richmond Night Market with great entertainment, live music, and of course, people watching. While in town be sure to try a delicious local bannock.
