The Stats Are in - This is How We Spend Our Time on the Web

BY Rosie Greaves

25th Apr 2019 Technology

Hootsuite and We Are Social’s Digital 2019 report has revealed loads about how the average internet user spends their time. Did you know, we dedicate at least six hours and 42 minutes to surfing the web each and every day?
With so much of our precious time being spent online, it prompted us to do some digging to find out what most of us get up to on the internet, this is what we found.
 Facebook
The standard Facebook user spends fifty minutes a day on this social media platform. Experts estimate this to equate to as much as one-sixteenth of our whole day!
Whatsapp
Unless you’ve lived under a rock for the last few years, you’ve probably noticed Whatsapp’s rise in popularity. The stats speak for themselves, the average person messaging via Whatsapp spends 195 minutes a week on this app!
However, we shouldn’t jump to negative conclusions- not all our time on Whatsapp is idly wasted. As many as 50% of businesses use Whatsapp to communicate with staff and contractors, so there’s a good chance a fraction of your time will be work-related.
SnapChat
Interestingly, the average Snapchatter spends over half an hour a day using this app and opens it roughly 25 times- we blame the hilarious filters, they’re addictive!
Online Shopping
This stat got me; I couldn’t help but giggle when I heard the average American employee spends near-on two hours a day online shopping at work!
Moreover, as many as 67% of millennial online shoppers, spend roughly six hours a week scrolling through e-commerce sites. It’s not just the younger generations splurging online; 72% of seniors spend two and a half hours a week shopping on the web.
Online Gambling
Over the years, online gambling has become increasingly popular and now accounts for as much as 33% of all gambling in the UK. Back in 2015, 4% of internet users placed a bet at least once a quarter (or more). From perusing the best slots sites to placing a bet on your favourite sports team, there are plenty of ways for you to enjoy the occasional flutter online.
Streaming TV and Movies
This stat might alarm some of you; the average American adult spends as much as six hours a day watching videos online! When you consider the popularity of Netflix, YouTube, and Amazon Video (and how bingeable some TV shows are) this actually isn’t that shocking!
