Why Do We Attach Meaning to Rings and Fingers?
According to palmistry, choosing to wear a ring on any particular finger conveys a message to the world; when we don a ring we are subconsciously increasing the metaphysical power of the finger and hand we wear it on.
For example we all know that, in most cultures today, wedding and engagement rings are worn on the fourth finger of the left (or sometimes right) hand. Why? The ancient Egyptians discovered that this finger is connected directly to the heart via a vein known as the vena amoris, or the vein of love.
Whether you wear a particular ring on the right or left hand is significant. Historically, in Eastern culture, the right hand is for giving, and the left for receiving. In more modern terms it’s been established that the left brain, which is responsible for logic, controls the right hand. The right brain, controlling the left hand, is responsible for creativity (the opposite if you’re left-handed).
It follows then that a gifted ring is best worn on the left hand. Rings worn on the left hand also empower creativity. The reverse is true, but try to keep a balance. Now to decide which finger best fits the ring to engage it’s best properties.
The thumb is strong, independent of the other fingers and indicative of willpower. It is also able to work as a team with the other fingers to manipulate difficult tasks. Wear a thumb ring if you wish to be strong, free and independent. Red stones, such as garnet or rubies, work well here.
The second or index finger
This is the finger most often employed in gesticulating to establish authority and power. It is also associated with leadership and ambition.
A ring worn on this finger will therefore point to the fact that you are assertive. Lapis lazuli, blue topaz and amethyst will suit rings on this finger.
The middle finger
As the centre of the hand, the middle finger represents personal identity, and the fact that it is the longest represents materialism.
Wearing a ring on this finger indicates and enhances the desire to be the centre of attention and accumulate the best things in life. Increase the power of a middle finger ring with pink stones like rose quartz.
The fourth or ring finger
As has already been mentioned, the ring finger is connected venously to the heart, and therefore a ring on this finger empowers our feelings of love, faithfulness and affection. It also promotes creativity and talent, particularly when worn on the left hand.
It doesn’t have to be a sparkling diamond for best effect; alternatives like moonstone, sapphire, jade or turquoise will also work.
The smallest - but the mightiest, in many respects - the little finger or pinky is associated with our intuition, and attitudes to others and the world.
A ring on this finger, which is furthest from the independent thumb, will intensify our bonds in business and personal relationships. Pick rings with amber or citrine stones.
