Fashionable gymwear for the over 50s

When you're going to the gym you can feel like you're looking your worst. However, that needn't be the case. Here are our top fashion tips when you're over the age of 50 and heading for a workout.

Patterned leggings

You may not think it, but women over the age of 50 tend to have incredible legs. Past the age of 50, your legs don't seem to hold fat as much as other areas do, so why not show off their shapely form in a pair of bright, patterned leggings? You'll feel great knowing that one of your best features is being accentuated by a pop of colour or pattern.

Double layer tops

Ladies, we all know that gym wear isn't always flattering and tends to amplify problem areas that you don't mind as much in normal clothes. If you feel like you have this problem, try buying gym tops that are double layered. These tend to be a lot more flattering and sooth those lumps and bumps that can gather around sports bras. If you feel confident when you look in the mirror, you'll get more from your work out.

Cushioned trainers

It's important to look after your joints, no matter what your age. If your gym activities tend to be more cardio and class based, make sure you invest in a good pair of trainers with decent support. These will make sure that you're knees aren't feeling the full impact of any running or step aerobics, which in turn can affect your back.

Fitted t-shirts

You'll be surprised how much more you notice the benefits of your work outs and the improvements to your body when you wear a T-shirt that is more fitted. You might be tempted to throw a baggy t-shirt on when you're heading to the gym, but not only will it make you look larger than you are, but it will affect your confidence when faced with the unavoidable mirrors. Don't feel obliged to pick a bright colour for your gym wear if you're not comfortable with the thought. If you're not feeling great about your body, choose dark colours that can be more flattering. If you've recently been on holiday and have a tan you want to show off, choose a white vest.

Dri-fit tops

Nothing is more unsightly in the gym than large sweat patches. Perspiration can be a particular problem for women around the 50 age mark, for obvious reasons. If this is something that you are paranoid about, and it's putting you off heading out to the gym, drift materials will help keep those wet cotton patches away. Dri-fit is specifically designed to allow your skin to breathe and reduce perspiration, which can lead to skin irritation. Keep cool and calm in smarter, more technological materials instead.

So what are you waiting for? Revamp your gym wardrobe now and start feeling better about yourself on that treadmill. You'll notice the difference to your confidence in no time and you may even find yourself working out a little bit more than before.
