How Bruno Maciel will influence a new generation of e-musicians

2022 has ushered in a new voice in Brazilian e-music - DJ iBruno. Not that he’s new. In fact, under his real name DJ Bruno Maciel, DJ iBruno has carved out a successful and burgeoning seven-year career as a DJ and music creator.

However, when two others came along using the same name as him, he was left with no choice but to rebrand.

He grew up in a not well-known city outside of South America. The Santa Catarina coastal city of Balneario Camboriu - possibly named after a local fish - lies halfway between Sao Paulo and Porto Alegre. The 32-year-old Tesla fan has since developed a seven-year career in the city and worldwide. He’s toured globally, played Lollapalooza, and has released two records - an EP and a full album. His top tune, Unviralize, has had 52,000 plays on Spotify alone.

To those into beaches and electronic music in South America, Balneario Camboriu is a kind of mecca. Sure, most of the year, it’s a sleepy city of 150,000, but its daily population swells to over 1 million in the summer. Why are they there? Sure the beaches are great, but the skyscrapers also fill up because of musicians like DJ iBruno.

So famous has it become for electronic music, partly because of artists like DJ iBruno, that Forbes Magazine said it was time for Bossanova to move over - Balneario Camboriu is Brazil’s electronic beating heart. Indeed, the country’s top two clubs - Warung and Green Valley area in the city. The latter of these turns over $1.6 million a night. Not only that, but the famed club Space has opened an affiliate in the city. DJ iBruno has played them all.

If you grow up in this environment, it’s not surprising that music has become an essential part of your life. Balneario Camboriu is Brazil’s e-music capital. Bruno Maciel built his career here, but when two others arose with the same name - one can copyright a brand name but not an accurate word, it made sense to rebrand.

And what a rebranding it has been. Announced on the 1st of November, 2021, Bruno changed his name to iBruno, which reflects modern technology, the idea of the self, and all things electronic. Thick iPhones, iPads, electric cars like Tesla and perhaps even the looming Metaverse where people worldwide will log into virtual nightclubs - it’ll need a DJ and a name like DJ iBruno is perfect for this new market.

We never know what the future holds, but with records like Unviralize and Chain of Legends under his belt, with the world reopening after the pandemic, and an ever-increasing desire for top talent at clubs worldwide, DJ iBruno is well-placed to take the globe by storm. Indeed he has the name for it, and the future is inspiring for this rising talent.
