10 Of the best winter bakes

As winter approaches with its icy grip, it’s time to hibernate in a warm kitchen and bake bread—and winter buns and cakes!

1. Country-style walnut bread rolls

Wonderful rustic walnut bread rolls that are a perfect vehicle for all sorts of fillings such as ham, cheese and pate, as well as simple butter. Serve with soups, stews, casseroles and hot-pots, or use them for hearty sandwiches.

 

2. Christmas stollen

Stollen is a German Christmas fruited bread filled with marzipan and dusted with icing sugar. This recipe is also filled with cranberries, cherries and blueberries, which add flavour and colour alongside the traditional mixed fruit.

3. Kugelhopf

Kugelhopf is a yeasted sweet bread usually baked in a fancy tube tin, and this recipe looks amazing. It would be perfect for any winter tea-time table, as well as being a wonderful cake-cum-bread to make for Christmas Day morning.

The Christmas spirit is nearly upon us, and it’s starting to feel very festive. To start off the winter and festive bakery season, why not make a batch of these delicious and easy Christmas sparkle cranberry flapjacks for the school or office lunchbox?

 

5. Lussekatter

These fragrant saffron buns are made especially for Saint Lucy's Day (Santa Lucia, St Lucia) on December 13, and are delicious when served warm with coffee. Cardamom also adds warmth to these sweet egg- and butter-enriched bread buns.

6. Wholewheat challah bread

Challah is traditional Jewish bread made for eating on the Sabbath. It’s slightly sweet bread made with eggs. It’s very similar in taste and texture to brioche, although it is eaten mainly as savoury bread.

7. Cinnamon apple cake

This cinnamon apple cake is moist, juicy and utterly moreish. As well as a perfect complement to a cuppa, it’s utterly amazing when served warm with a big dollop of clotted cream!

8. Marmalade brownies

Putting marmalade in brownies is, taste wise, like making a giant Jaffa Cake! These gooey, rich chocolatey bakes would be great served warm with some ice cream or custard, but go down equally well with a coffee or glass of milk on the sofa!

9. Pinza di Claudio

In many parts of Italy, stale bread is used to make cakes, such as the Venetian Pinza. Like many dishes that started out in poor kitchens, these bread cakes are now seen as part of the traditional cuisine and something to be proud of, and this one looks truly delectable!

10. Lincolnshire plum bread

This fabulous fruited loaf is traditionally baked for Christmas in Lincolnshire, although you will see it year-round in bakeries throughout the region. It is a delicious when served warm with butter, or with a slice of cheese, similar to the Yorkshire way of serving Christmas cake.
