Boney M: Records that changed my life

The original member of the iconic disco group Boney M, Maizie Williams, tells us about the records that had a profound influence on her life.

Let's Dance

by David Bowie

The song Let's Dance is one of my favourite songs that brings back so many great memories when we used to go out to discos and dance all night long. David Bowie was an amazing artist and has inspired me to be who I am and do the things I love to do. Bowie was versatile, crazy and went his own way, which made him special and adored by many.

And the song Let´s Dance connects with our music as well, as it's very easy to dance to. There's just something about the music from that era that just lives on forever through—that's what makes Bowie so special. Boney M are also lucky having hits around that time- making it loved by people for a very long time. I’m so very grateful for that.

Aretha

by Aretha Franklin

My mother used to play a lot of Aretha Franklin when I was younger, so I've always loved her soulful music. Aretha would often fill our home with her beautiful music on late Friday afternoons. I think her 1998 album Aretha is the best one; it holds the greatest love song of them all—"A Rose Is Still a Rose".

It was a fantastic album backed by some great producers. I remember that some of her previous records didn't do too well, so it was a great comeback for her. Aretha is very close to my heart.

What's Going On

by Marvin Gaye

His smooth voice is the best one of them all! I always put on Marvin Gaye when I feel stressed out. I really like most of his albums but What's Going On is the one I like the most. It's such a historic song (and album). He was such a strong person, embedding great messages into his lyrics, trying to create awareness around the world, both political and non-political. I really admire him for that.

It was such a tragedy the way he died—far too early. I think he's a fantastic and empowering role model for a lot of people from all walks of life. "I Heard It Through the Grape Vine" and "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" are two other of my favourite songs by Marvin Gaye.

Boney M. are performing as part of the 40 Years of Disco tour which is nationwide in March 2018. Tickets available now.
