Benedict Cumberbatch's heartfelt speech for Syrian refugees
In a longer version Cumberbatch criticised the government's treatment of the refugee crisis, and urged the Hamlet audience to help. The passion of his delivery has stirred the internet and the video started to go viral. Coupled with the harrowing poem by Somalian Warsan Shire, it's easy to see why it's doing the rounds.
"no one leaves home unless
home is the mouth of a shark
you only run for the border
when you see the whole city running as well"
"you have to understand,
that no one puts their children in a boat
unless the water is safer than the land"
It's a subject close to our hearts at Reader's Digest. Our photojournalist, Craig Stennett, recently visited the Greek Island of Lesbos and witnessed the plight of refugees arriving at Europe's shores. You can read Craig's story in the December issue of the magazine, in the meantime, here's a preview.
