Britons have gone crazy for coupons, vouchers and special deals. Here's how loyalty cards, vouchers and coupons can help you save money each month says money expert Harvey Jones.

How to save money with loyalty cards and coupons

We redeemed 603 million coupons and vouchers worth £1.7 billion in 2013, according to new research from Valassia. The average person saved £64 a year, but with a little effort, you can save a lot more than that. Here are some schemes you can't afford to miss.

Tesco Clubcard

If you shop at Tesco regularly, you have probably already signed up to its Clubcard. You collect one point for each £1 you spend in-store online and on Tesco Mobile, and one point for every £2 on fuel. Tesco's newly-launched current account also offers Clubcard points wherever you use your debit card, not just in Tesco.

Sainsbury’s Nectar

For every £1 you spend you earn two points. Once you hit 500 points, you get £2.50 off your shopping. That's a penny off for every £1 you spend (which seems to be a benchmark for reward schemes). You can also earn points in Argos, Next, Debenhams and on EasyJet.

Boots Advantage

This is one of the most generous schemes of all. With four points for every £1 you spend, you get 4p back in the pound. There are special deals for parents and over-60s that boost that return to 10p for every £1 spent on certain items.

Myvouchercodes.co.uk

There is dozens of voucher and coupon websites to choose from, including Myvouchercodes.co.uk, Vouchercodes.co.uk, TopCashBack.co.uk, HotUKdeals.com and Quidco.com. Each site boasts thousands of offers of food, clothing, restaurants, toys, music, beauty, travel and much more, with discounts of up to 50%.

Santander 123

The Santander 123 current account pays generous cashback on your direct debits. You get 1% cashback on your council tax and water bills, 2% on your gas and electricity, and 3% on your phone, mobile, broadband and TV. You also get cashback on the Santander 123 credit card.

Be warned, this account has a £2 monthly fee. You need to maintain a minimum balance of £1,000, pay in at least £500 a month, and set up two direct debits to qualify.

Halifax Debit Card

Halifax debit cards give you between 5% and 15% cashback on your shopping in Argos, Homebase and Morrisons. To qualify, you have to take out a Halifax current account.

American Express Platinum Cashback Everyday card

This card gives you 5% cashback for the first three months, on up to £2,000 worth of spending. Thereafter you get 0.5% cashback on spending up to £3,500 a year, 1% to £7,500, and 1.25% above that.

Nationalrail.co.uk

Railcards aren't just for youngsters, adults can get discounts of up to one-third on my standard and first class rail fares. And there are plenty of two-for-one offers at London attractions if you take the train to get there.

Once you have signed up to a scheme, remember to cash in your points. Billions of pounds worth of potential cash rewards are sitting around unclaimed.
