Get the look: Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again

3 min read

The musical sensation we all know and love is back on July 20th with Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again. Celebrated for everything from its talented celebrity cast to incredible vocals and iconic set wardrobe, there’s no doubt that this follow-up film will hit record-breaking sales figures, with many people flocking to re-immerse themselves in life on the Greek island.

And what better way to welcome the release than by adopting the styles of some of your old, and soon-to-be new, favourite characters? If you want to get the Mamma Mia look this summer, read on to find out what items you should be bringing into your wardrobe.

Ruby
Played by Cher (Cherilyn Sarkisian)

Showing up blonde in a white power suit and a pair of studded ankle boots, an exciting new development brings Sophie’s grandmother, Ruby, to the island. Not one for subtlety, metallics, sequins and neutrals are the order of the day for Ruby — and sometimes all at once!

Recreate one of her iconic debut looks with this tailored white Mea jumpsuit from Reiss (£90), and the exact shoes worn in this scene (albeit in a different colourway): these Shard boots from Terry de Havilland. Complete the look with a pair of exaggerated cat-eye sunglasses, like these ones from H&M (£8.99) for that luxury retro aesthetic that you’ll soon discover is central to Ruby’s character.

Young Donna
Played by Lily James

Focusing on retrospect, the film introduces a younger version of Sophie’s mum, Donna Sheridan.

Transporting the audience back to more traditional times, expect hints of older fashion trends, with young Donna regularly seen sporting colourful floral tops, mid-wash dungarees and stripy retro jumpsuits.

However, one of the most talked-about outfits is bound to be the tiered frill flares that Donna and the Dynamos don in a showstopping scene. Shown teamed with a dark-wash denim jacket, young Donna channels true 1970s with these statement denim jeans. Get the look with these flare hem denim jeans from I Saw It First (£10) — with a modern ripped design, you won’t have to time travel to release your inner-Donna.

Sophie
Played by Amanda Seyfried

The main character and the world’s sweetheart, Sophie boasts natural beauty with her low-key style and minimalist approach to fashion and beauty.

Regularly depicted in simple, clean cuts and lightweight fabrics, Sophie prioritises holiday chic over statement style, never overdoing it with layering or jewellery.

Steal Sophie’s signature style with a loose blouse, like this one from Mint Velvet (£49), paired with a mid-wash denim skirt to nail the off-duty holiday look. Round it off with a pair of these Office Shoes espadrille wedges (49) for extra style points and some texturising salt spray to get Sophie’s tousled beachy waves.

Donna and the Dynamos
Played by Meryl Streep, Julie Walters and Christine Baranski
The saying "bad things come in threes" doesn’t ring true for these talented ladies. A close-knit friendship group and energetic girl band, Donna, Rosie and Tanya are occasionally portrayed in the sequel as their youthful selves.

With festival season upon us, make like Donna and the Dynamos and introduce metallic Lycra for the ultimate statement look, or imitate their daytime styles. While Tanya and Rosie stick to patterned maxi dresses and floral blouses respectively, Donna’s style is similar to Sophie’s, often dressing in slouchy low-key dungarees layered with loose, airy shirts. With a mixture of personalities comes a mixture of styles, so pick whether you want to be Donna or a Dynamo.

There’s never been a better excuse to step out of your style comfort zone. So, update your wardrobe this summer to incorporate looks from this musical-filled world of platforms, flares and metallics.
