Event Cinema specialists CinemaLive are pleased to announce they are working in partnership with C-Major Entertainment to bring George Bizet’s Carmen on the Lake (Bregenz, Austria) to approximately 300 cinemas in the UK on Thursday 14 September.

A show of a lifetime

Performed on the spectacular water stage of Lake Constance in Bregenz (Austria), Carmen is a story of passion, destiny and obsession. The French composer’s opera is most famous for its Spanish melodies, including the Flower Song, Habanera and the Toreador Song.

On 14th September, experience Carmen like never before—recorded live on the floating stage during the Bregenz Festival. As with their previous spectacular productions, you can expect the staging of this classic tale to have an extravagantly original and innovative design, with the waters of the lake being used as an extension of the stage.

What to expect

Kasper Holten, the former Director of Opera at the Royal Opera House in London, directs this production of Carmen with the set designed by the British artist Es Devlin. Her past work includes sets for such stars as Adele, Take That, U2, Pet Shop Boys and Kanye West.

The show has already premiered in Bregenz this July, and it proved very popular with the press. The Telegraph’s Mark Ronan has praised the main performances: Gaëlle Arquez’s dramatic Carmen, Daniel Johansson’s strongly passionate Don Jose and Elena Tsallagova’s powerfully emotional Micaëla. But what really makes this production stand out is the original staging and the striking visual projections used throughout.

"The lake-stage in Bregenz is a venue for theatrical spectaculars, and Kasper Holten’s production of Carmen on Es Devlin’s extraordinary set was a knockout. The design concept emerged when Holten met Ms Devlin after her visit to Seville and they tossed cards in the air to represent the fate Carmen feels she cannot escape – recreated here on a massive scale for the audience of 7,000 watching from the lakeside amphitheatre" —The Telegraph

Georges Bizet’s captivating music, with its instantly recognisable Spanish sounds is known to one and all. Music directors Paolo Carignani and Jordan de Souza lead the musical direction of this production, with the Bregenz Festival Chorus and Prague Philharmonic Choir accompanied by the Vienna Symphony Orchestra.

This uniquely staged spectacle is the second one under CinemaLive’s recently launched brand The World’s Most Spectacular Operas that showcases stunning operas from around the globe in cinemas, making them accessible to UK audiences.

Close to 300 cinemas across the UK will screen Carmen on the Lake captured in Bregenz, Austria on Thursday 14 September.
