Most people experience a painful sore, or ulcer, in their mouth at some time. It can be caused by damage to the mouth, such as an accidental bite to the cheek, or sharp teeth or food, and also by stress.

Mouth Ulcer Treatment and Remedies

If you suffer from recurrent mouth ulcers, seek advice from your doctor; you may have an underlying condition such as a vitamin deficiency or you may need to avoid certain foods or medications. Whether recurrent or not, most mouth ulcers will clear up without treatment, but there are actions you can take to help yourself.

Virgin Cocktail for Ulcers:

It may sound like a recipe for a virgin cocktail, but a dab of peppermint oil, a measure of cooled camomile tea and some fresh basil leaves are the perfect ingredients to help soothe a painful mouth ulcer.

For pain relief

  • Put a dab of peppermint oil on the affected area, but don't overdo it or you could cause further irritation.
  • Use a mouthwash of cooled camomile tea.
  • Chew some fresh basil leaves.

To speed the healing process

  • Avoid hard foods such as crisps or toast that may aggravate the ulcer.
  • Use a soft toothbrush.
  • Try relaxing activities such as yoga or meditation to reduce stress levels.
