British grown asparagus is in season from the end of April—June, but it's a fickle crop and its appearance cannot always be guaranteed. Helen has selected a few scrumptious recipes to spruce up your asparagus.

If you love asparagus it is well worth the time to establish your own asparagus bed, either from seed or crowns. It is a long—term project as you have to wait until the third year after planting before you harvest any of the crop.

To boil asparagus, simply submerge and cook for 3—6 minutes depending on the thickness of the stalks. Store asparagus in the dark, preferably in a jar of water, in the fridge. Allow 8—10 spears per person as a starter, and about 6 as a side dish.
