A summer wedding invitation dropping on your doormat brings joy often followed by swift panic—what on earth are you going to wear? Attending nuptials can be an expensive business and when travel, gifts and accommodation are involved, the luxury of spending a small fortune on an outfit is simply not possible. Thank goodness for the high street…

Reiss: Best for repeat wears

wedding guest outfits

The last thing any of us want it to turn up to a ceremony in the same outfit as another guest, but Reiss’s line of simple-yet-beautifully-cut looks offer a great base with which to pair accessories you already own.

Their soft powder blue short suit (£360) is ideal for those who fancy something a little more modern than a floaty dress, but we also love the colour clash of their magenta cocktail dress (£180) against a cobalt suede shoe (£160).

Reiss might be a little pricier than other high street stores, but their pieces are a solid investment for those who find themselves with a calendar full of events.

House of Fraser: Best for the bridal party

bridal party outfits

Bridesmaid, flower girl, mother of the bride… all vital roles to fill at a wedding and ones which require the perfect look without overshadowing the bride.

The strongest of all the high street department stores, House of Fraser’s wide selection of brands allows for a one-stop-shop for weddings of all styles, whether you’re an in-law who likes the drama of Ted Baker’s ivory dress coat (£275), a more casual two-piece (top £89, skirt £40) or our personal favourite for a younger guest, a romantic Biba gown (£99) offset with pink accessories (fascinator £20, shoes £75).

Matalan: Best for guests on a budget

wedding guest ideas

You’re flattered to be invited, but aren’t serving any particular role… Matalan is the perfect go-to for a last-minute outfit on a budget. Big on colour and simple in design, these are all fashion-forward pieces that can easily dressed down for the office or an evening out to ensure maximum rewear.

The well-cut pink suit is a steal at just £36 and looks great with silver accessories. Alternatively, why not opt for a block coloured trouser (£16) with a floral top (£18) for a more casual reception-appropriate look.

Topshop: Best for fashion-savvy brides

With more and more weddings taking place outside of customary religious ceremonies, fashion retailers are taking heed and offering modern brides a selection of non-traditional wedding dresses.

Topshop is leading this charge with this candy-hued bridal collection that's ideal for a summer party.

Their broderie Anglaise green frock is just £150 and looks lovely with a lace up ballet shoe (£29), or opt for something more classic with the £325 silk slip. There’s plenty for guests too—their dreamy floral gown (£165) would fit perfectly at an outdoor event.

Marks and Spencer: Best for classic styles

A go-to for every occasion, Marks and Sparks come into their own with occasionwear. All four of our chosen options would work perfectly for less formal brides or guests alike, teamed with shoes that would work well on the town.

Our favourite pick is the lace frock. Available in four different colours for just £79, it looks great paired with floral shoes (£38) and a bright yellow bag (£25)—two pieces well worth packing for the honeymoon!
