The legendary Suzi Quatro reveals the songs that changed her life and influenced her as a person and a musician, including Nat King Cole and Billie Holiday.

"You Must Have Been a Beautiful Baby"

by Bobby Darin

This was the first record I ever bought with my own money. I think my dad gave me a dollar and it was 98 cents so I got two cents back.

And obviously, it became a big favourite of mine because when you actually go out and purchase something, that’s yours. It’s not your parents buying it for you—that’s a different thing. So that record had an impact on me, it’ll always remain a favourite.

"Don’t Be Cruel"

by Elvis Presley

This was the first time I saw Elvis Presley on TV. I was seven, and I decided at that age, seeing that show—believe it or not—that I was going to be him. So that song and that performance changed my life. It gave me my path.

I still get that same feeling every time I see it, all the time.

"When I Fall in Love"

by Nat King Cole

I’m going to be playing this at my funeral! It had a huge impact on me. Emotionally, it made me feel everything that we should feel as human beings. To me, it’s a whole rainbow of emotion. It makes me cry to this day.

I think I heard it for the first time in the 1950s. My dad used to play it a lot and I heard it when it first came out. It’s one of my favourite songs of all time. If I had a number one, I guess that would be it.

"God Bless the Child"

by Billie Holiday

I’ve actually sung this one myself. I really related to the lyrics, “God bless the child that’s got his own”. I related to that because I was one of five and you've got to have your own to survive, you know? You've got to have your own space. So I really related to that and I’ve done that live on stage before.

I’m a fan of all kinds of music because I grew up in a musical family, but I listen to Billie Holiday all the time.
