Kirsty Wark on Doctor Who

Early Darleks

I first saw Doctor Who when I was about ten and it scared the living daylights out of me, particularly the Daleks. They were impregnable and didn’t seem to have any compassion. They were beyond my moral compass.

The show was different to anything I’d ever seen. Science fiction wasn’t on my radar at all. I was aware of the likes of Jules Verne, but this was the first time I’d seen the idea of something like time travel visualised. I didn’t carry a love of the show into adulthood, but it helped me get a handle on books such as The Midwich Cuckoos and The Day of the Triffids, a good feeder for getting into a particular kind of literature.
